“I didn’t realize how bad my legs were until I got treated and felt the difference.”

Many men and women develop chronic venous insufficiency over the course of their lives and don’t realize it until it is serious. It can lead to permanent discoloration of the skin in the lower legs over time. Unless treated, this process moves beyond discoloration to result in venous ulcers and chronic wounds which are difficult to heal and treat. These wounds tend to recur quite frequently until the underlying chronic venous insufficiency is dealt with.

This under-diagnosed and under-treated condition associated with varicose veins can be the root cause of a number of serious symptoms including:

  • Aching
  • Fatigue or heaviness
  • Pain such as throbbing, burning, stabbing
  • Cramping
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
  • Numbness
  • Ulcers

This is an underlying problem for many patients with varicose veins and spider veins. Venous insufficiency means that blood cannot return from the legs effectively so it tends to pool in the ankles and legs. This leads to the symptoms listed above and may also lead to staining of the skin and even skin breakdown (ulceration).

The treatment begins with a detailed consultation and ultrasound performed by Dr Gropper. Once the diagnosis is made, the most common treatment is endovenous laser ablation or laser vein treatment. This is a one hour treatment performed in the office using local anesthesia.
